Distinguish Between Empirical, Molecular and Structural Formulas

  • Empirical Formula is the simplest Whole Number ratio of the atoms in a Compound The Empirical Formula of C2H6 is CH3
  • Limited use on its own as it does't show the actual atoms in the Molecule
  • Molecular Shows the actual Number of atoms of each element present
  • It is quite of limited Value as the properties of a compound are determined not only but the atoms it contains, but also by how they are arranged in relation to each other and in space
  • Structural shows every bond and atom in either 2D or in 3D representing all bond angles
  • R is used for side groups that don't need to be represented such as methyl or ethyl side chains
  • Automatic compounds contain a benzene ring C6H6
